Ed. Crotalo - 1995

Music has demonstrated to us many times how the concept of time is expressed in absolutely relative terms. There are songs that are burnt in a season and pieces destined to remain current forever. At the same time also the term "new" changes weight in relationship with the situations: it is new what I meet for the first time, that I did not know before, and not what has been published since few time. There are also discs that seem old the day after you have listened to them, or that they continue to being new, listening after listening.

"Anni" (don't mistake the title, is not the temporal word, but an own name) of Rodolfo Santandrea is not a new disc, historically speaking, as it has been published in 1995, basing on recordings completed between 1989 and November 1994. But it succeeds to be it because it has happened to us to only recover it recently, because at every listening is renewed, because, maybe, it contains some crumbs of infinity.

In the new work, self-produced and recorded, the full sounds of the previous disc are missing, but it doesn't bother the five-years period that separates the various recording collections. As noticed in the short review of the record house Crotalo "in Anni we pass from hard songs and very series to a bit eccentric pieces till strongly emotional and romantic dances": from the dance one and rapped "Gloria", to electrical rock´n´roll of "Clandestino", from the funk´n´blues of "Mille braccia" to the old taste and singer-writer style of "Hello Dolly" and "Anni".

All foundations, these, that would authorize the expectation of mixed and decomposed entirety. Instead the album is amazingly coherent. Coherent in the musical continuity with "Help me, I love dolphins" of which maintains the best foundations, widening the musical search towards new expressive horizons, coherent in an expression of a real artistic maturity, coherent in the good musical execution and the search of balance between music and text.

Difficult, in consideration of the immense times of realization of the job and of the avidity of data in cover notes (written the texts and the name of the author, with no specific date for the songs, nothing about the musicians), to complete an all-around reconstruction of the artistic references. Enjoyable and mature the texts, wide the choice of arguments: from the analysis of the dualism sky-earth in " Gloria" , to, we wish ourselves, prophetical "Mister Gligorov", from intimate and splendid "Sweet Mama" and "Anni", to politics "Clandestino". From the same ones, progressively farther away from the melancholic sense of the previous album, we can see a Santandrea that watches to its 40 years old as a time where to build something, in the resistance, even, but however in the positive hope of making.

The opening song is immediately approachable to "In cielo, in terra e in hit parade" recorded in the 1991 from Rudy Marra; next to an identical musical positioning of the pieces, th links between the two texts are evident (from the Gloria to Shiva). Which one of the two authors has been the original inspirator, in absence of historical replies, it is difficult to say, even if, also confirming his own artistic singularity, in many passages of "Anni" a sure scent of Marra is breathed. A smell that, however, we breathe gladly and that, considered the begineer Rudy of ´91 and already mature Rodolfo of 1988, we would have to define scent of Santandrea.
A scent that I love to breathe and to withhold within for the explicit courage of a text lacking in hypocritical brakes, able of a clamorous "Gloria alleluia for the erotism of Jesus / that is transmitted in tele and received in TV" however not not-holy because supported from the conviction that "we need the love / in order to understand". And at the same time able of denunciation: "seated over a world massacred from the money / from the games of power and from the gun powder / the history is all here, here there is the peace on the earth and in the sky there is the glory".

Intimate and melancholic dance in which music exalts the simple effectiveness of the text "she believed it was easy and she let go, and let live (…) and now Alice does not live here anymore".

Soft song, without for this light being. It plays with repeating itself of a refrain that, winking to Carbons, it plays ambigue on the sense of the waves. "For you, if there are still here, / for a minute or an hour / I´m still here / for all if there is somebody / I transmit from the radio / the latest news / and the good music / tonight it makes us feel good"

It is the dream of a collective communication "all the lights of the city are again switched on… the border of love now is going away" and real "we don't need theatres, seats / and there are no more / curtains or crystal chandeliers", for a common need of change "they can burn for who still wants / to believe in the freedom/ and I still believe in it". "We will burn like torches / like torches or bonfire".

Sax and keyboards are mixed and fused with the words for a result really enjoyable. "five hundred thousand mouths / opened wide from the hunger / there are five hundred thousand / and they´re looking for your lips".

Feeling at the pure state: "There is nothing to wait now / gives off all your light, gives me your light / because I do not have nothing more to search, now. / I am melted like salt / in this sea of refusals / and I have found again your voice / on the beach, / a bit more of love / and maybe a bit more of anarchy / there is nothing more to find, my little sister".

Disassembling and re-assembling freely the text we can launch a disenchanted look on the world of music. "it is not r´n´r, is a clandestine affair, / made secretly, a swindle. / Is a round-about of assassins and raw preys, / of guitars from the destroyed voices, / of whores, drugged and gays, / of singers from the rebuilt faces, / ruined like old play boy".

Like Alice and Sweet Mama, Anni it is not a song but a small piece of the great heart of Rodolfo. Music to feel more than to listen or to understand, useless the comments: "they will be able to say to us that it was not love / but we know that we can try it".

The title repeated it in the refrain make us to think next to, the good last one, Dalla. It´s not like this. Santandrea successed here to marry a dramatic text and a light music here and he sucessed so well to expect an action of active attention, in order to comprise the thickness of the piece. "I would want to be a postal parcel / for being able to get you".
