Help me, I love dolphins

Aiutatemi, amo i delfini
(Help me, I love dolphins)

Dischi Ricordi - 1989

The album "Help me, I love dolphins" exit in 1989 on label Discs Ricordi (SMRL 6388 1 \ 2), Editions Fado \ Monna Lisa, Poematica production. It contains eight songs, all made from the single Santandrea, except "La chitarra di Dio" (The guitar of God), written four hands with Giancarlo Alboni. The agreements are from Poematica, except for " Un´arancia" (An orange - wonderful time) of Santandrea and " Un delfino" (A Dolphin) of Alboni. In the disc there is a classic formulation, confirmed from an acoustic choice, that privileges the use of traditional instruments (piano, congas, sax, violins, viola,…) respect to an historical period in the Italian music that defines the years 80´s like the reign of home-made electronica music. Opera statement of the voice disappears in order to yield the step to dark and deep tones, without having less attention to the lyric sound of the words and the way how the song is placed.

This new choice of sector if on one side has disappointed some, from the other side places to the center the songs, sophisticated and simple, at the same time able of poetry communication ("Un garofano" (A Carnation), "Martino e le stelle" (Martino and the stars), "La chitarra di Dio" (The guitar of God)) or, more simply, than to hit the ear ("Un´arancia - wonderful time", "Buona notte e buon Natale" (Good night and merry christmas)).

The texts are essentials, constructed around to some strong emotions, communicated in way not pointed out, but however without fronzoli. The total result is innovative and gradevole at the same time. The disc inserts Santandrea in the best Italian singer-writer category, but it difficultly renders it good for charts for its typical individuality.

The more immediate approaches are to Battiato (for the start of the texts and some hermetic references), to the best Dalla (for the ability to pick some magical musical and human topics), to Rudy Marra (for the actor style of the use of the voice, an half way between Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen). Is Right to observe how the first Marra makes its apparition on the scenes of the Ariston only three years after the publication of the " Dolphins".

OCCHI DI SPECCHIO (MIRROR EYES)
Choruses, piano and arches are runnig in majestic, progressive growing. Essential text: "But in my eyes is reflected limpid … on these mirrors is reflected limpid".

UN GAROFANO (A CARNATION)
Song nearly classical in order to describe the most intimate of the emotions: "And as a love it will grow / slow, slow, slow, in your breast / and as a carnation it will fall / slowly, slowly, slowly, on the land / … And from yours belly it will be born / like a child".

UN´ARANCIA (WONDERFUL TIME) (AN ORANGE (WONDERFUL TIME))
Is, with "Martino and the stars" and "Good night and Merry Christmas", between the most appreciables pieces of the disc. It is based on a simple and winning melody, but not for this reason banal (in some passages it recalls "Walk on the wild side") joined to a text to half way between the hermetic and the not-sense: "An orange / which dances which dances in your belly, in your belly / a pineapple, and a bottle on the table / bottle table, bottle table … In my glass your voice".

MARTINO E LE STELLE (MARTINO AND THE STARS)
One of the many examples of how to conjugating poetry and music: the history of Martino that, watching far away, fished the stars, seated on the edge of the sea, but in the morning "sold the souls, the most beautiful ones that he had fished in the middle of stars in order to get payment".

BUONA NOTTE E BUON NATALE (GOOD NIGHT AND MERRY CHRISTMAS)
It conjugates the atmosphere of afro rhytm (at the end even a point out to Day-oh) and violins that recall Nordic arias, in that magical concoction of contrarys where Santandrea always succeed, wonderfully well. "and I remain to wait for the sun / that tomorrow will smile to you / and in silence I still wait for it".

LA ROSSA DEL CREMLINO (RED OF THE KREMLIN)
the russian environment for a song in which descriptive strophes it gains the power of the intimate moments: "And maybe maybe I should say you / I should say I love you / throw you the pebble slowly slowly / in order then to hide the hands / I, who maybe maybe love you / I should say it a bit less loud / in order not to hear my voice / the voice, the voice".

UN DELFINO (A DOLPHIN)
It wants a large heart and a courage for giving in meal to a public a song of this intensity. "I seated at the restaurant / poor dolphin / made in pieces from the life / as its destiny / I seated at the restaurant with my dolphin / I have the destiny in the soup".

LA CHITARRA DI DIO (THE GUITAR OF GOD)
The song is opened with the unmistakable guitar of Goran Kuzminac, that gives us smell of road and of the concerts and it is closed with a fantastic sax solo. In the middle a declaration of attempts that makes mission: "he said you play the guitar of God / play it where you have left / where you are ended / where they have thrown you / burnt inside".
